Preparing to Meet with your Lawyer

You are almost there already if you already decided to setup a meeting with your lawyer. You want to make the best of your first meeting to make certain that you are meeting with the right person for the job and that they can fulfill your legal needs properly. Make certain that you are both on the same page and that it is a fit for both of you before proceeding beyond the first meeting. This may sound easy, but there are some important things that you should take to make sure the meeting is productive.

  • Don’t schedule the meeting in between other appointments. Your first meeting is important for your new lawyer and it may take longer than expected to clearly identify the legal issue and discuss a possible course of action. The details and complexity of individual cases varies significantly and you will want to allocate enough time to completely discuss your options and your legal issue.
  • Prepare all of your documentation before going to the meeting. This means that you should make copies of everything you're going to need to take with you to your new lawyer’s office. Place the original documents somewhere safe in a manila envelope or file folder so your documents are easy to find if needed at a later date.
  • Bring a list of questions with you to the meeting. There may be a lot to discuss so this is a very important step so you do not forget any of the important details of your legal issue. Some people are nervous the first time that they speak about their problems and we have found that it helps them to bring notes or prepared questions to the meeting.
